Hominy Grill, Charleston, SC

1. Where do you get your grits?

From the Old Mill of Guilford, an 18th century water-powered grist mill in Guilford County, NC.  Robert grew up eating these grits.  You can order grits and other tasty ground stuff directly from them: http://www.oldmillofguilford.com/

A quick word – there are also other great stone-ground products out there – just don’t use the supermarket stuff because then you will not like them and you will then say to us – “I just don’t really get grits.” Well, of course you don’t!  You are eating something with all the taste processed out of it!  Trust us…just start with good grits and everything in life will make perfect sense…

2. What is hominy?

We could write a treatise on this topic but on a basic level, hominy is what you get when a kernel of corn is treated with an alkaline solution, resulting in something that feels sort of like a soft, pillowy chickpea. Dried hominy is ground to make grits. Of course, then it gets confusing because old time Charlestonians call grits “hominy” and vice-versa. Like we say, we could write a treatise on this…

3. What is the story behind the building?

The building was built in the 1800’s and operated as a barbershop for many years until it became a restaurant.  Hominy Grill opened in 1996.  Yes, the pressed tin ceiling is real and no, we don’t know where the Windsor chairs came from….Our friend and amazing artist David Boatwright painted the “Rosie” mural on the building.
